He was anyhow minded to follow his role as Will Shakespeare, chasing Gwyneth Paltrow on the big screen, with a good deal of real Shakespeare onstage (he’d had his first proper break in the mid-1990s in two seasons with the RSC). He was once told (by the actor Brian Cox) that he was “a character actor trapped in a leading man’s body” and he feels there has always been truth in that. He was, he says now, always dubious of the attractions of full-on stardom. I don’t have an entourage to pay for: well, I do, but they are four and six years old He was offered a five-film contract by Harvey Weinstein and Miramax, then at the height of their powers, having cornered the market in blockbuster literary adaptation and intelligent costume drama. Shakespeare in Love won seven Oscars and opened many Hollywood doors to Fiennes, who had more straightforward matinée-idol star quality than his edgier elder brother Ralph. His own flare of international fame came 18 years ago now, when he illuminated a pair of British films – Shakespeare in Love and Elizabeth – which came to dominate the awards season prior to the millennium. You could make the argument that Fiennes himself is ideally placed for these roles. In both cases it is story of humanity versus the cause. Liddell and Lawrence were very dedicated human beings, and when you raise that bar you get challenged and there is fallout.” And inevitable disappointment? “Yes. The romance and the achievement stays with us, but there is a cost to that. “These two men – Lawrence and Liddell – had been the iconic stars of their time.

When I met Fiennes on a sunny lunchtime break from rehearsals in a studio near Clapham Common last week, I put it to him that “What happened next?” is always a more interesting human story than the full spotlit glare of celebrity.įlying Scotsman: as Eric Liddell in The Last Race, the unofficial sequel to Chariots of Fire. I seem to have worn a lot of tights in films, but those are just the films that worked best Fiennes takes the lead in Adrian Noble’s Chichester Festival revival of Terence Rattigan’s play Ross, which finds Lawrence home from the desert after something of a breakdown and living under an alias as an officer in the RAF. To open that film, Fiennes is taking a couple of days away from rehearsing the comparable afterlife of that other Boy’s Own legend, Lawrence of Arabia. The film is concerned with the little-known years after that in which Liddell gave up on sporting fame to become a Christian missionary in China. Fiennes plays Eric Liddell, the Flying Scotsman who in 1924 famously refused to run on an Olympic Sunday because of his religious beliefs.

Like that Shakespearian sonnet you've heard recited over and over again, I'll never get sick of Shakespeare in Love.
SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE JOSEPH FIENNES MOVIE
If you're a fan of mushy loves stories, silly comedies, fantastic writing, and utterly gorgeous costumes, this movie is for you. But I believe that it's a truly great film that should be appreciated by all. For that reason, many people like to deride Shakespeare in Love as an unworthy winner, or a product of a scheming awards campaign. The film, centered around Shakespeare's writing of his most popular work, Romeo and Juliet, with Viola as his inspiration, was a huge success back and famously beat out long-thought shoe-in Saving Private Ryan to win Best Picture at the Oscars. It's one of the '90s most memorable films, and it's one that I, for one, could watch over and over again. So she pretends to be a man and, through the usual farcical comedy misunderstandings and adventures, she and Shakespeare fall in love - but things turn tragic when it's discovered that Viola must marry a wealthy lord and set sail for the Americas. For those unfamiliar, the Oscar-winning film follows a fictionalized version of William Shakespeare (Fiennes), who falls in love with Viola (Paltrow), a young woman who longs to act on stage in a time when women were forbidden to do so. I'm talking about 1998, a year when the two aforementioned actors played opposite one another in a delightful little comedy called Shakespeare in Love. Let's go back to a simpler time, my friends, when Joseph Fiennes wasn't making headlines for playing Michael Jackson, and when Gwyneth Paltrow was best known for her acting roles, not her products on Goop.
